Dear Ieko, Mazinger Z is impressive, realistic. It seems want to go off the page. Duke riding Silver is absolutely poetic and poignant.

I agree with Ieko-san! It is canon official! As you can see here, Duke offered his lily to Kouji. The lily is flower symbol of virginity. Kouji also hold a phallic symbol, meaning he is gay. This is Japan's subtle way.
